When Should You Buy Your Wedding Dress? A Complete Timeline Guide

Planning a wedding is a whirlwind of excitement, and one of the very first, and most magical, tasks on your list is finding the dress. But if you’re anything like the brides we see here at The White Closet in Tampa, you might be wondering: When is the perfect time to start shopping, and when should I actually place my order?

Stop stressing, because we’re here to give you the complete, worry-free timeline to finding your dream gown!

12-10 Months Before the Wedding: The Sweet Spot
This is the golden window! We know it seems early, but trust us, you want to give yourself plenty of time.

Why Start Now?
Design & Production: Most of our designers craft your dress specifically for you. This meticulous process - from cutting the fabric to the final embellishments - can take anywhere from 6 to 9 months, especially for highly customized gowns.
Shipping & Buffers: Once the dress is complete, it needs time to ship to us here in Tampa. You want to avoid expensive rush fees, which can quickly add up!
Enjoy the Process: Shopping shouldn't feel rushed! Starting early allows you to visit a few different boutiques (like us!), try on various styles, and truly savor the moment when you say "yes."

Our Recommendation: Start your research (Pinterest, magazines, etc.) around 12 months out, and book your first appointments between 10 and 11 months before your date.

9-8 Months Before the Wedding: Time to Order!
You've found the one! This is when you should be ready to pull the trigger and place your order.

Customization: If you plan on making any changes - like an extended train, lining a bodice, or changing a neckline - you need this time for the designer to incorporate those specifics into the production schedule.
Finalizing Details: Be prepared to finalize your size and sign the contract. A deposit is typically required to begin production.

Pro-Tip: If your wedding is in peak season (Spring/Fall), ordering closer to the 9-month mark is always safer, as production schedules can get backed up.

6-4 Months Before the Wedding: The Dress Arrives!
Your beautiful gown has arrived at The White Closet, Tampa! We will immediately inspect it and then reach out to you to schedule your first fitting.

The Waiting Game is Over: Seeing your dress in person for the first time is always exciting!
Storage & Care: We keep your dress safe and sound in our temperature-controlled boutique until your first alteration appointment.

3-2 Months Before the Wedding: Alterations Begin
Alterations are critical to achieving that perfect, made-for-you fit. This process typically requires 2 to 3 appointments.

First Fitting: Bring your wedding shoes and undergarments! Your seamstress will pin the hem and adjust the fit.
Second Fitting: You'll try on the dress again to check the initial alterations and discuss any final tweaks, like bustle options.
Final Fitting/Pickup: Everything should be perfect! This is usually when you take your gown home, carefully pressed and ready for the big day.

The "Late" Buyer: What If I Have Less Time?
Life happens, and sometimes the timeline speeds up!

Under 6 Months: You will likely need to pay rush fees. These costs are determined by the designer and can be significant.
Under 4 Months: You'll be restricted to sample dresses (gowns available off-the-rack) or designers who offer extremely fast production times. While we can definitely help you in a pinch, your selection will be more limited.
